Potties.
Saturday was Day 1 of the Three Day Potty training method. As expected, Hayden was resistant. We followed the rules in the literature that David instructed me to read. Unfortunately, I opened it up with good intent but got hung up on the 30 pairs of underwear mandated for each child. Who has time to read when they are frantically shopping for 60 pairs of underwear?
I had some sticker shock over the price of underwear - but between Target, Walmart and Amazon, I was able to fulfill the underwear requirement without entirely draining the bank account.
The first step to the method is to have the kids carry out all the diapers and put them in the trash. (Of course this is wasteful and just for show). Then, you put them in their underwear and say, "Who wants juice??"
To them, juice was water that tasted like candy.
Their minds were blown.
They guzzled sippy cup after sippy cup like college kids on spring break. Their little bellies grew like water balloons.
"Do you have to pee?" David would ask them.
"Do you have to pee?" I would ask them.
They would shake their head, extend their hand to pass us their empty sippy cup and demand, "More juice."
They held their pee for an impressive amount of time, but what goes in must eventually come out. And when massive amounts go in, massive amounts come out. I will spare you the descriptive (and dramatic) details.
Sunday was Day 2. It is always peaceful after a storm.
By Day 3, we were back to our normal routine, except always with a towel in tow.
We went to Costco:
We went running (it was too early for Hayden to be photogenic)
I took us to see the cow just in case we had to make a pit stop. This road already smells like poop.
We also went to the mall:
So far, accidents have been few and at home. Of course, I am knocking on wood as I type this.
Pools.
I know, it's not a very fun topic. My apologies in advance.
I started logging my workouts two weeks ago. I will refer to this as the beginning of training.
Week 1 included three intervals workouts (in addition to Masters and endurance workouts):
Workout #1 was 250x4. My fastest was 4:36.
Workout #2 was 200x5. My fastest was 3:40.
Workout #3 was 100s. My fastest was 1:42.
Week 3 I revisited these intervals with the following workout:
250 x 2 - 4:21 / 4:21
200 x 2 - 3:28 / 3:23
100 x 2 - 1:36 / 1:37
200 x 2 - 3:30 / 3:30
I am not really sure what those numbers mean in regards to swimming 1500 meters in open water. BUT, I know that 4:21 is faster than 4:36, 3:23-3:30 is faster than 3:40 and 1:36 is faster than 1:42. This may be a new road but I think its the right direction - so far. I am still knocking on that wood.
So be sure when you step. You step with care and great tact and remember that Life's a Great Balancing Act.

Coldwater Rumble Trail Run Race Report
Even though I know this does not sound like me, I did go to the race with any competitive intention. The race was 12 miles, and I only have ran that distance once since November. And, it was on difficult (hilly and rocky) trails: (photo courtesy of race website)
Trail miles are harder than road miles and I did not feel prepared. But I love trail running, as you guys know, so I was excited for the opportunity to do something a little different.
It was a chilly morning - we got to the race early and sat in the car awhile. Finally we braved our way and huddled around a space heater:

You see those mountains in the background? Yeah...we ran up those!
The race started on a dirt path and it started fast.
I was a little concerned about starting a race that fast, but at the same time, it felt good and almost natural. After the first 400 meters, I was the 2nd female and I maintained that position for the first half of the race.
The trails were curvy and sometimes you could get a good glance at those in front of you, and those behind you. Instead of chasing the number one woman, I decided simply to make sure that I stayed ahead of the number three woman. I was okay with second place and in fact, it sounded rather nice.
The number one girl maintained her lead. I could tell she was a serious runner because she had very fancy sunglasses.
At around mile 4, we entered a wash. I was expecting this and I was told running in sand was very hard. But it didn't feel hard to me at all - and by the time we were at Mile 5, that number one girl wasn't very far ahead. I considered catching her, but it was too early in the race to make a move.
By the time we reached the aide station a little past Mile 6, she was probably around three seconds ahead of me. It was tempting to catch her but we were already moving pretty fast - I knew that if I increased my speed, I would get tired and she would just pass me back. Also, I didn't want to lead the race. The trail was marked by orange markers, but it was a lot easier just to follow someone rather than pay close attention.
However, Mile 7 was uphill and I had no choice but to pass. Maybe she got a cramp, or felt light headed...maybe it was just a bad day.
I was having a great day though! My legs felt light, my muscles felt loose and I was so happy to be trail running. And I just kept trail running, all the way to the finish for an unexpected win!

I lucked out with this race because instead of going to my mother's house on Friday, they went to the zoo with my Dad. So, Mom didnt mind watching them so that I could do this race instead.
The kids had fun at the zoo:

But preferred the fake animals over the real animals:

However, please note that Brenna is wearing pants. Lately, I have found that I can actually reason with her but I don't want to talk about that too much yet so that I don't jinx it.

6 weeks to go, 1 week left
Training for this week:
Monday: 8 miles w/ 1 mile x 3 (6:24, 6:19, 6:25), 3 min RI + 2200 yard swim
Tuesday: 24 mile bike ride (19.4mph) bricked with 3.5 miles with the jogging stroller. We visited the cow. The cow is an oddly placed animal just a half a mile away. I say "oddly placed" because we dont live in a neighborhood conducive to live stock. However, once I accidentally ran down a dead-end street to find this uniquely hidden gem in the city:

Wednesday: 8.25 miles w/ 4 miles at tempo pace (7:03)+ 2300 yrd swim
Thursday: 20 minutes on trainer, followed by 20 miles outside, bricked with 3 miles. This would have been a fine workout except for I fell off my bike. I was going pretty fast (between 19-20mph) but yes, I am fine. I was able to lay my bike on the side, and walked away with just some sore hips.
Friday: 55 minute trail run (forgot to charge Garmin) + 2200 meter swim
Saturday: 12.3 mile easy run. I say "easy" loosely because my pace was 7:54. I wanted to run a little slower but there was no slowing my running partners down!
Sunday: Rest day. It was supposed to be a 37 mile bike ride with my girls, but I think yesterday's run was pushing it and that I should relax instead because I am officially IN TAPER MODE!!!!!!
My taper schedule looks roughly like this:
Monday: 25-30 mile easy bike ride
Tuesday: Mr.Coach's speedwork
Wedneday: Rest day
Thursday: Easy spin class
Friday: Easy swim
Saturday: Rest day
Sunday: Race!
I also will get a massage, some ART, and take a few naps.
And, just maybe, we will take a walk to visit the cow.
